Coffeyville -
Ann Hargrove, 84, of Coffeyville, Kansas died at her residence on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Though she fought a prolonged battle with cancer and heart disease, she loved her life to the end, dancing in her bed while watching the musical Mama Mia and tapping her toes to the sound of Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington.
Born in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Guy and Marie Moulder, she was the third of four children. As with many young people of that era, World War II loomed large in their lives. In 1942 Ann married a young soldier named W.A. "Wilbur" Hargrove, saying their vows in the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville. Their first child, a daughter, was born during the war, a son arrived soon after. In 1948, the family moved to Coffeyville and a new job for Wilbur at what would eventually become Hargrove Auto Supply.
During the 50's and 60's, Ann worked at Parkersburg, Edward's Ladies Wear, and RX Pharmacy as well as a long stint helping Wilbur with the family business. An outgoing and vivacious woman, Ann enjoyed playing bridge and really shined on the dance floor. Her children report their mother had big band music playing at home and taught them to jitterbug at a very young age. But the early sixties she traded work for her other passions including lots of family time boating at Grand Lake. She was frequently found playing golf both on the course at Coffeyville Country Club and at the course near their winter home in Pharr, Texas.
Surviving Mrs. Hargrove are Wilbur, her loving husband of 68 years; daughter, Claudia Crim and husband William of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Tom Hargrove and wife Laurel of Coffeyville; brother, Guy Moulder of Kingwood, West Virginia; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville, 300 West 9th St., Coffeyville, with Dr. Wayne Norton and Chaplain Mike Graham officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor 30 minutes prior to the service. Entombment will follow in the family mausoleum in Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, or the First Baptist Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
