Milford Allen Unruh, 83, of Coffeyville, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, OK.
He was born March 13, 1927 at Newton, KS to Henry William and Katherine Pauline (Goerzen) Unruh. He spent lived and attended school in Newton until he was 16 when his family moved to Coffeyville where he completed his education graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1945, and Coffeyville Junior College in 1949 with a Associate of Arts Degree, before attending Tulsa University, in Tulsa, OK.
In September 1950 he entered the U.S. Army receiving basic training at Ft. Riley, KS and Medical Basic Training to be a Medic at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Milford served in Korea from March 1951 until June 1952 with the 38th Medical Company, 2nd Inf. Div. Following his return to the states he was stationed at Ft. Carson, CO until his discharge from active duty. He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve from June 1952 until May 1968 when he was called to active duty serving with the 1011th S/S Co in South Vietnam until August 1969. Milford was released from active duty in June 1975 and was transferred to the 174th S/S Bn in Coffeyville where he was assigned until retiring in March 1987.
On August 30, 1953, he married Betty Jean White at Red Oak, OK; following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their family.
Milford was worked for the Coffeyville Fire Department from 1945 to 1947, Page Milk Co. from 1950 to 1960, and City of Coffeyville Electric Department from 1960 until retiring in March 1991. Following his retirement he worked part time at Jencast as a guard.
He attended the First United Methodist Church, and member of V.F.W. Post #1022, American Legion Post #20, and Coffeyville Sertoma Club.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Unruh of the home; two sons, Anthony Milford Unruh and wife Jeanie, of Coffeyville, Kelly Keith Unruh and wife Laura of Plainfield, IL; two brothers, Milton R. Unruh of Enterprise AL, and Keith Unruh of Spring Hill, KS; one sister Janice Komer of Edinburg, TX; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville with Rev. John Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, KS.
Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
