Coffeyville - Dr. Gary Johnson, D.C., 61, of Independence, passed away Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Independence. He was born May 16, 1948 at Independence to Harold "Bud" and Martha (Hull) Johnson. He grew up in Independence receiving his education at Independence Bible School and Independence Community College, before attending Pittsburg State University. After completing his education at PSU he entered Cleveland Chiropractic College in Overland Park, KS where he completed his Doctor of Chiropractic. On June 29, 1969 he married Karol Henry, they were later divorced. On July 11, 1975 he married Cathy Blake at Pawhuska, OK. Following their marriage they made their home near Independence where Dr. Johnson practiced for many years. He attended God's Family Church, and was a member in the Kansas Chiropractic Assoc. American Quarter Horse Assoc., and Experimental Aircraft Assoc. He the manager and bass player for Black Widow Band in Independence, and was an avid flyer, enjoyed motorcycles, scuba diving, horses and drag racing. Survivors include his wife, Cathy of the home; two sons, Chad Johnson, and Jeremiah Johnson both of Independence; one daughter, Amanda Johnson of Independence; his mother, Martha Johnson of Independence; one brother, Kevin Johnson of Independence; three sisters, Shirley Darbro of Huntsville, AL, Jan Robinson of New Albany, KS, and Marsha Rhodes of Cherryvale, KS; and five grandchildren, Evan, Logan, Angel, Emma, and Anigan. He was preceded in death by his father. A Celebration of Dr. Johnson's life will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2009 at Wesley Place at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Rev. Johan Tredoux officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Cleveland Chiropractic College in Overland Park, KS; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W.
