Obituary of Jack L. Lively

Jack L. Lively, 82, died Saturday from complications of a long illness. He was born to Clyde and Marguerite Lively on October 27, 1931 in Coffeyville, Kansas. He graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1949 and Coffeyville Junior College in 1951. Jack earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Tulsa in 1953 and commensurately was commissioned a 2nd Lt in the USAFR. After 3 years of active duty as a pilot Jack attended law school at the University of Oklahoma graduating in January 1959. His career in the USAFR continued until 1990 when he retired at the rank of Major General. Jack continued flying in his civilian career and during the 1970's owned and flew a sailplane with other SE Kansas pilots. In his civilian life, Lively practiced law at Becker, Hildreth, Lively and Eastman and later at Hall, Levy, Lively, Viets, DeVore and Belot . He ran for District Judge and was elected twice, completing both terms. Following this he served as Senior Judge, hearing cases around the State of Kansas for nearly 10 years. Jack was very active in the greater Coffeyville community holding leadership positions with the local school board, Coffeyville Community College Board of Trustees and the board of directors at Coffeyville Memorial Hospital. Jack held membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers, Kansas Bar Association, SE Kansas Bar Association, Montgomery County Bar Association, Kansas Association of Defense Council, Rotary Club and the First Presbyterian Church. An avid jogger Jack enjoyed many long runs with friends around Coffeyville. Mr. Lively is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Lively of the home, his son, David and wife Kim of Tulsa, OK and daughter, Lori of Olympia, WA, and five grandchildren, Indra, Denver, Ben, Anna, and Max. A memorial service celebrating Jack's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church Friday, July 18 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Diane Massey officiating. Military honors conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Patio in Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Following Jack's wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register book on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family suggests memorials in Jack's memory to the First Presbyterian Church or Coffeyville Community College Foundation; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W.
