Our mentor, our teacher, our friend, that's what Vernie was and so much more. He enjoyed life and he enjoyed people. Over the years when we ran into him, enjoyed our talks. He remembered things we didn't. Thank you Mr Stallings for all you did over the years. We'll miss our talks at the basketball games. RIL Mr Stallings, gone from this world but never our hearts. ~ "The Alston's" Sharon, Calvin, Debra, Trish, David, and Kisha

Please accept deepest condolences in the loss of Mr. Stallings. He was a very special teacher to myself and countless others. He was an great man and terrific teacher. He will be missed tremendously. My husband Rocky had him as an assistant scout leader many years ago and always had great things to say about him. Even with us growing up, getting married and moving away he still would come into our lives. My sister had bought my grandson a used bicycle that needed a few things done. When I went home to Coffeyville I took this bike to Mr. Stallings and he made it like new. The last time we saw him was at the Longfellow School Reunion. He was one of a kind. We are so very sorry for your loss. Carol and Rocky Ragan, Alma, AR

He was my 5 th grade teacher @ Longfellow. He would sit in his lawn chair and watch us as we played at recess. He wore his hair fairly short, and I would come up behind him and rub his head, as I called it my crystal ball. I remember him laughing with us and cutting up. I have thought of him over the years. What a legacy he left, we will all miss him.
For all his kindness, and goodness, I believe he will be rewarded..
God bless!

I graduated from high school in 1964, and never had Vernie as a teacher or Boy Scout leader, but still considered him a good friend. When you are 10-20 years old there are plenty of things that my buds (Fred Brown, Tom Bowser, Dwain Childers) and me wouldn't think of telling our parents, but when we were sitting with Vernie on the roof of the old house next door to Fred, or visiting on the porch, Vernie was easy to talk to.
Vernie led a Nowata area troop to the Colorado Springs Jamboree in the late 50's. Ike was the President, toured the grounds in a convertible! I went with a SE Kansas troop. We visited Vernie there a couple of times, and they looked like they were having a lot more fun than we were. That was Vernie, he was having fun no matter the circumstance.
I was very fortunate to have known him, and know that he will be missed, but always fondly remembered.

Vernie was one of my favorite people when I was growing up. He had such cool stories to tell about his travels to Australia or various basketball tournaments. He was always willing to fix my bicycles, too. I'll remember his warm smile and greeting, the time he took me fishing, and those ubiquitous red socks! My condolences to his family and friends.

I loved Vernie. He was a great man who loved all and took a great interest in all the youth of Coffeyville. But I especially remember him for helping me. He gave me a job selling pop at the ravens football games when I was only 12, and then picked me up for the ravens basketball games so I could hand out programs in exchange for free entry. He took Reese Skinner and I to many away games too, including the NJCAA championship in Hutchinson to see the great ravens team of that time with Craig Tucker. He was a great influence on my life and I will always cherish those memories.

My sincere condolences to you and your family. Mr. Stallings was my 5th grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School. My entire family (siblings) had him for a teacher. He was very near and dear to our hearts and we will miss him. I'll never forget him wearing his red socks every single day. My brother, Chad Davis, always had a bet going with Mr. Stallings. My brother was an athlete and very fast!!! Mr. Stallings would bet my brother that he couldn't run home and make it there before he could make it in his car. He told him if he won he would take him out to dinner. My brother spent many dinners with Mr. Stallings at Wendy's Restaurant where the new Eggbert's is today. He was absolutely one of my favorite teachers!!! Every time he saw me, he would remember those bets he had with my brother and show me those red socks!!! When my sons were little, he fixed their bicycles. I'll never forget him and his kindness.
R.I.P Mr. Stallings. Until we meet again.
Humbly submitted,
Ms. Karlas Bossell

Vernie was one of the greatest men I have ever had the pleasure to have had a friendship with in my entire life. He was a great mentor and was always ready to encourage all us. He and my mother led a cub scout troop for boys my brother Jim's age and I can remember Vernie coming to the house when I was about 5 years old to lead and teach this young men. He made P.E. fun with the music and exercises to Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass.
My wife and I spent an evening last fall on his porch reminiscing about his and my military service. Anyone who was lucky enough to have had him as a teacher or a friend have been blessed! Love you and will miss you Vernie.
