Vernie Stallings
Vernie S. Stallings, 90, of Coffeyville passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Colbert, OK.
He was born August 11, 1924, at Kenefic, OK to Clyde and Arrie (Williams) Stallings. Vernie grew up and attended school in the Kenefic area graduating from Kenefic High School. He received his Bachelor Degree in Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University at Durant, OK, and later received his Master's Degree from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS.
Vernie was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy from August 3, 1943 to March 8, 1946.
On August 29, 1958, he married Mary Delores Fiddler at Miami, OK; she preceded him in death on January 15, 2012.
He taught school in Nowata, OK for three years before moving to Coffeyville in 1957 where he taught at all the grade schools, later teaching at Longfellow School for many years until retiring after teaching for 41 years.
Vernie was a member of the First United Methodist Church, NEA, KNEA and V.F.W. Post #1022. He also served as a scout leader for many years. In his spare time Vernie enjoyed working on bicycles.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Stallings of New York City, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Delores; and two brothers, Clyde Stallings, and Moselle Stallings.
A Memorial Service celebrating Vernie's life will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville with Pastor Nicole Schwartz officiating. Private inurnment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park in Coffeyville.
Friends may sign the register book on Monday, August 3, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337
