Obituary of Vernadean Barnes
Vernadean "Dean" Barnes, 92, former longtime Sedan resident, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville where she had been a resident for the last seven years.
She was born on June 25, 1925, at Columbus, KS to William T. and Agnes M. (Fuller) Thompson. Dean grew up in the Columbus and Scammon area where she attended school, graduating from Columbus High School in 1943.
On September 11, 1943, she married Robert L. "Bob" Barnes at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Scammon. Dean lived in Houston, Texas while her husband served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. After his discharge, they lived in Scammon and West Mineral until moving to Pittsburg while Bob attended college and they began their family. After Bob graduated, they moved to Sedan where he taught and coached at Sedan High School. While in Sedan, Bob began his banking career which took the family to Howard, Hill City, Hays, and Glen Elder before returning to Sedan in 1962. Her husband preceded her in death on July 21, 1994.
Dean was a homemaker and an active member of St. Robert's Catholic Church in Sedan and St. Robert's Altar Society. She also belonged to Beta Sigma Phi Sedan Chapter and was in several bridge groups. Dean always loved spending time with family, but especially loved spoiling her grandchildren.
Survivors include her six children, Robert D. Barnes and wife, Pam of Foley, AL, Steven E. Barnes and wife, Sherron of Spring, TX, David W. Barnes and wife, Carol of Coffeyville; Mary Ann Hills and husband, Scott of Manhattan, KS, Marcia Lea Klein and husband, Kevin of Mount Herman, MA, and William "Woody" Barnes and wife, Lori of Caldwell, KS; her brothers and sister, Vernon "Bud" Thompson and wife, Carol of Honolulu, HI, William "Billy Sam" Thompson of Olathe, KS, Collette Burgan and husband, Jim of Columbus, KS, and Lawrence "Dan" Thompson and wife, Suzanne of Allen, TX; sixteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Agnes Thompson, and her husband, Robert
.A Rosary Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2017, at St. Robert's Catholic Church in Sedan led by Father Robert Spencer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 30, 2017, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Scammon with Father Jeremy Huser officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Scammon.
Friends may call on Thursday, December 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Friday December 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Robert's Catholic Church in Sedan.
