Obituary of Derek Scott Messner
Derek Scott Messner, 44, of Coffeyville passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 from injuries received in an automobile accident west of Coffeyville.
He was born on June 14, 1973 at Caney, Kansas to Dwayne and Sonya (Fitchl) Messner. Derek grew up in the Caney area attending Lincoln Memorial Elementary School, Caney Valley Junior High, and graduated from Caney Valley High School in 1991. Following high school he attended Independence Community College and Kansas State University, receiving a Bachelor Degree from Pittsburg State University and a Bachelor Degree from Emporia State University.
On July 20, 2002 he married Courtnee Welton in Jamaica. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville. They were later divorced.
Derek joined the Coffeyville Fire Department where he served the citizens of Coffeyville over 15 years attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
Derek attended Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, Kansas, he enjoyed hunting, target shooting, collecting guns, car restoration especially muscle cars, and sports especially when his son was playing. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and brother firefighters.
Survivors include his son, Ty Messner of Independence; his mother Sonya Hall and husband, Rick of Havana, Kansas; his father Dwayne Messner and Carlotta Gordon of Caney, Kansas; two brothers, Dustin Messner of Goodman, Missouri, and Matthew Messner and wife, Lyndsee of Copan, Oklahoma; three step-sisters, Tarrah Foulk and husband, Jay of Bronaugh, MO, Hailey Hall of Bartlesville, OK, and Rainey Hall of Owasso, OK; step-brother, Brian Gordon; three nephews, Gavin Messner, Braydon Messner and Eli Messner; and one niece, Maysa Messner; two step-nieces, Maurissa Foulk, and Jillian Foulk; two step-nephews, Henry Foulk and Emmett Foulk, step-grandmother Kay Dunham and his most special friend, Olivia Gysel.
A Memorial Service celebrating Derek's life will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Tyro Christian Church with Evangelist Nathan Boldt officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Lutheran Cemetery southwest of Tyro, Kansas. Derek will have a full firefighters funeral with honor guard.
The family will greet friends on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to service time at the church.
Memorials are suggested to a fund being established to benefit his son, Ty Messner's education; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
