Obituary of Doris Dean Gowen

Doris Dean (Reed) Gowen passed away from natural causes at her daughter’s Colorado home on Thursday, June 4, 2020. Doris was born on March 19, 1928 in Coffeyville to John Delbert and Violet Ellen Reed.
She went to Coffeyville schools graduating high school in 1945. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Clement Gowen, she moved to San Diego to wait for her husband’s return from the Navy. They selected Coffeyville to make their home and started their family. She was a homemaker and participated in many children activities including leader of the Girl Scouts. After her husband’s job injury, she knew she needed more education to obtain a better job. She graduated from Coffeyville Community College with an Associates of Arts degree. Doris Gowen then attended Pittsburg State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education, a Masters in Counseling and a Specialist in Counseling and Education graduating with honors. She always enjoyed her various job positions: Junges Baking Company secretary, Field Kindley High School secretary, taught night classes for Coffeyville Community College, Pittsburg State University resident dorm director, and then as Vocational Tech Counselor in Columbus, Kansas.
She was involved in her Coffeyville and Columbus churches and continued to stay in contact with many after her move to Colorado. Her favorite place in life was with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was always ready to go on a cruise or visit with family and friends. She enjoyed life and will be missed by many.
She is preceded in death by husband Clement, her parents, and sister Betty. She is survived by her daughter Carol Sue Rogers and husband David of Tulsa, OK; granddaughter Jill Bigelow and husband Jason of Manor TX; grandson Dylan Rogers and wife Andrea of Broken Arrow, OK and great granddaughters Ashlyn, Tristyn and Shayla Rogers; grandson Luke Rogers and wife Stephanie and great grandsons Logan and Alex Rogers; son Billy Joe Gowen; daughter Peggy Ann Fulks and husband John of Woodland Park, CO; granddaughter Melissa Canaday and husband Chad and great grandchildren Madison and Jacob Canaday of Westminster, CO; grandson Jeremy and wife Kathy of Wyoming and great grandson Chandler of Colorado Springs, CO.
There will be a family graveside service at noon Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Coffeyville, KS.
David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville is assisting family with arrangements.
