Margaret Nellie (Nell) Flanagan, 89, of Laguna Vista, TX, longtime Coffeyville resident, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.
Nell Flanagan was born December 5, 1923 in Vinita, Okla. to Alfred Ernest and Alice A. (Dolan) Morrey. She moved to Coffeyville, Kansas with her family in 1924. She attended elementary and high school in Coffeyville, Ks. and then St. John Hospital school for nursing, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduating in 1945.
On June 10, 1945 she married Lt. William Patterson Flanagan, USAF, at Holy Name Catholic Church, in Coffeyville, Ks. They lived in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Georgia, Japan, Mississippi, Arizona, France, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Germany. Following Maj. Flanagan death in Germany, on June 10, 1972. She returned to Coffeyville with her children.
Nell Flanagan was employed by the Montgomery County Health Dept. for 10 years as a staff nurse, a volunteer nurse for the Red Cross and was a driver for meals on wheels. When her children where young she was active in scouting and CYO. Nell was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, and active in the altar society, building committee, diocesan counsel of catholic women for Wichita diocese, and a member of Matinee Musical and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Nell traveled to Japan, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Panama Channel, Mexico, Canada, British Columbia, Alaska, and the USA.
She is survived by: Susan Flanagan, Laguna Vista TX, Lisa King, Tatum TX, John Flanagan, Greeneville TN, Anne Francis, Laguna Vista TX, and Leslie Holland, Chillicothe MO. Eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A Rosary Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013 at Holy Name Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ben Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Holy Name Catholic School; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
