Rick D. Lanning, 59, of Coffeyville passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 20, 1954 at Long Beach, CA to Dean Edwards and Myrna Louise (Wing) Lanning. When he was young his family moved to Coffeyville where Rick grew up and attended school graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1972. He later attended Coffeyville Community College.
Rick was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After being discharged he returned to Coffeyville and was a fireman with the Coffeyville Fire Department from 1978 to 1986. He then began working at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center EMS and began taking classes to become a Para-Medic receiving his degree in 1994 from Coffeyville Community College. Rick continued working at CRMC EMS until retiring in 2008 due to his health.
On October 6, 1984 he married Phyllis Schlotfelt at Liberty, KS. Following their marriage they made their home in the Coffeyville area.
Growing up Rick attended the First Southern Baptist Church. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and riding motorcycles.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Lanning of the home; one daughter, Kristin Pippin and husband Rick of South Coffeyville, OK; his mother, Myrna Lanning of Coffeyville; his father and step-mother, Dean and Sally Lanning of Loveland, CO; one sister, Debbie Madl of Cherokee, KS; one step-sister, Susan Johnson; two grandchildren, Faith Pippin and Wyatt Pippin both of South Coffeyville; OK; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Heath Clements.
A Celebration of Rick's life will take place during the Rick Lanning Benefit planned by his co-workers and friends on April 13, 2013 on 9th Street in Downtown Coffeyville starting at 10:00 a.m.
The family suggests memorials in Rick's memory to the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Foundation for the EMS Dept.; contributions may be left with the David W. Barnes Funeral Home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
