Mary Ann "Marie" Henderson, 92, longtime rural Niotaze resident and Chautauqua County school teacher, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
She was born April 2, 1920, at Elk City, KS, to John and Grace (Cowan) Bruce. Marie started school at Mt. Tabor schoolhouse in northeastern Chautauqua, County, at the age of five. The family later moved and she attended Powell Valley school. She graduated from Elk City High School at the age of 16. Marie then passed the county teacher's examination and began her teaching career at Powell Valley at the age of 17 in 1937.
Niotaze, District 90, was Marie's next school where she taught grades five through eight. While teaching she began work to obtain her B.A. in Education from Southwestern College at Winfield, completing the requirements in 1966. She taught 22 years in Sedan Grade School and retired in 1982.
On May 13, 1944, she married Q.C. Henderson at Winfield, KS. Following their marriage they made their home on their farm north of Niotaze.
Marie was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women, Phi Delta Kappa, NEA and KNEA.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Henderson and wife Kathy of Coffeyville, and Greg Henderson and wife Ruth of Olathe; three grandchildren, Heather Lowrance and her husband Jeff, Lisa Henderson and her husband Jared
and Jared Henderson; two great-grandsons, Max and Wyatt Lowrance.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Glenda McDonald; four brothers and five sisters.
A Memorial Service celebrating Marie's life will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Sedan, with Rev. John Warring officiating. Private family interment will precede the service at Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze.
Friends may sign the register book on Saturday from 9:00 a.m to noon at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
