Sedan - Herbert H. Sturges, 73 of Sedan, Kansas passed away January 26, 2013. He was born June 6, 1939 in Hewins, Kansas to Charles and Catharine Sturges, and was raised and attended school in Sedan. Herb served in the United States Air Force from 1961 until 1965 as an Air Policeman. He married Charlene Burdett on July 20, 1962. After discharging from the Air Force, Herb was a long-time Koch Industries employee until the business was sold in 1999. He went to work for the new owner until he was unable to work any longer. His work took him away from Sedan but he maintained strong ties to the community until he could return to live there in 1992. Herb was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sedan and the Grafton Community Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising cattle and farming. He loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grandkids. Herb made the best vanilla surprise homemade ice cream any kid was lucky enough to eat. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George Sturges, sister Letty Pinkard and grandchildren Lacie Reyes and Morgan Miller. He is survived by his wife Charlene; children Lori (David) Miller of Wichita, Matt (Tina) Sturges of Wichita, Amy (Richard) Miller of Sedan, and Nancy (Chris) Patterson of Wichita; two brothers; John Sturges of Salem, Oregon and Darrel (Zeek) Sturges of Aurora, Colorado; grandchildren, Brad, Amy, Timothy, Andrew, Kelsey, Austin, Katrina, and Elisha; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Priestly and Pistol; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends may call on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sedan with Reverend Gene DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Chapel Cemetery North of Sedan. Memorials have been suggested to the Lacie Reyes Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church of Sedan and to the Sedan High School Music Department, and may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
