Obituary of Nolan Luhn

Coffeyville - Nolan H. Luhn, age 90, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born to Felix and Annie (Stutzenbecker) Luhn on July 27, 1921, at Kenney, Texas. He graduated from Bellville, TX High School, Kilgore, TX Junior College and Tulsa University. Nolan married Carol Schoen in 1948 and they later divorced. On August 6, 1966 he married Laudine Stillwell at Coffeyville, KS and they celebrated 45 years of marriage. At Bellville High School, Nolan was an All-District end his junior and senior years, was captain of the basketball team his junior and senior years, along with being named to nine all-tournament teams. As a member of the track team, he won the high hurdles at regionals his junior and senior years. At Kilgore Junior College, Nolan was an All-State end and also an All-State center in basketball. At Tulsa University, Nolan played in the 1943 Sugar Bowl and 1944 Orange Bowl. He played basketball at Tulsa and was co-captain his senior year. While at Tulsa University, Nolan was chosen to be a pall-bearer for Will Rogers when he was moved from California to the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma. In 1945, Nolan was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and, though he was chosen to play in the All-Star game, he was asked to play with the Packers against the All-Stars. He played 5 years with the Packers, retiring after the 1949 season. Nolan was selected Second Team All-Pro in 1947 and was in the Packers press guide for several years. Nolan retired from Farmland Industries the end of 1983, after 25 years as Pipefitter Foreman. He was a volunteer football coach at Coffeyville Community College from 1968 until 2003, his longest association being with Coaches Dick and Skip Foster, as well as Coach Jeff Leiker. Nolan has coached more players than any coach in the history of the college and was very supportive of CCC. In 1998 he was inducted to the NJCAA Hall of Fame. Nolan was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Tri-M Sunday School Class, and the Honey Bee's Good Sam Camping Club. Nolan is survived by his wife, Laudine of the home; one son, David Luhn and wife Kathy of Fayetteville, AR; one daughter, Dr. Christina Luhn and husband Lee Brown of San Diego, CA; and two granddaughters, Pamela and Jessica Luhn. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Leslie, Ervin, Roger, and Felix, JR.; sisters, Doris, Elvie, and Aline and two infant sisters. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville with Rev. John Collins and Dr. Dan Ferguson officiating. Following Nolan's wishers cremation will take place after the service and inurnment will take place at a later date in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
