Arthur Eugene Schindler, 90, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.
He was born April 1, 1921 in Hood River, Oregon to Julius and Alma (Casady) Schindler. He was born and raised in Oregon until moving to Arizona where he received his education. In 1938 he enlisted in the National Guard, after serving two years in the Guard he enlisted in United States Navy in July of 1940. He was in the communications field and served many wars until he was honorably discharged in 1981. He retired as Chief Petty Officer with the Navy Sea Bees.
On October 15, 1967, he married Virgie Challis in Miami, Oklahoma. They traveled the world for many years while Gene was in the Navy. They lived in California and Sedan until permanently moving to Sedan in 1988.
On November 3, 2003 he was preceded in death by his dear wife Virgie.
He was a member of the Sedan VFW, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, and a former member of the Moose Lodge in California. He also enjoyed golfing, all of his grandchildren, and traveling in his R.V.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virgie, one son, Tom Schindler, his parents, and two sisters.
He is survived by two daughters, Cyndi Cunningham of Sedan, Kansas and Alma Harnsberger also of Sedan, Kansas; two sisters, Virginia Harp of Eureka, California and Teddy Twiss of Reading, California; four grandchildren, Sherrie Kopf, Thomas G. Schindler, Armanda Willhite, and Lyn Fish; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jessica and Samantha Kopf, Cassie and Tayden Schindler, Tressy Alcorn, Swan, Jasmine, and Kevin Nguyen, Victoria Walker, Jaymee Cunningham, Adrian Vasquez, Mariah Giacomini, and one on the way.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2011 at the Hollow in Sedan. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorials to the Sedan VFW or the Sedan Lion's Club. Those remembrances can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
